Book Review - Take the Stairs by Rory Vaden
Review by Kevin Golden
Recently I went about looking for some new motivational / success principles books, videos, and the like. I remembered a speaker from years ago that I had seen at a former employer named Rory Aplanalp. But there was one problem. I couldn't remember his last name. I went to YouTube to find this Rory something-or-other fella that I remembered from over a decade ago. I didn't find him. But I did "accidentally" find Rory Vaden, a young, sharp-dressed, well spoken, energetic professional speaker. Wow! Here's a guy that didn't look over 50 in the professional speaking business who is doing well and has a NYT best seller. He must be doing something right. Then I discovered his book, "Take the Stairs - 7 Steps to Achieving True Success". I browsed through his website and watched the promo video to see if he had anything different to say than other professional speakers / motivational authors. The answer was a resounding "YES" it is different. Just from the video and the summary of the book on his website, I could see already that his message of "how to become successful" had a different twist on it. And to be honest, I avoided reading the book for a few weeks. I didn't want to read about self-discipline. "I'm a successful entrepreneur, business owner, author, father and dad, and all-state trombone player. I know self-discipline. I don't want to read more about doing the hard things now so I can have what I want later". But no matter where you are on your journey of success and self-discipline, you can benefit from reading this book.
In his book, Take the Stairs, Rory Vaden uses the stairs and escalator metaphor to describe the increasing problem with our procrasti- nation, at least here in America, to take the shortcut and easy way out approach, and our "I want it now" attitude. He takes you through why people fail, the concept of self-discipline, taking action, and step by step strategies for living a life of self-discipline that is fun and rewarding. This book is eye opening and very thought-provoking. Rory is very transparent in this book as he uses stories from his own life, as well as case studies from other successful people, to bring these principles to life with real examples. I couldn't put it down and finished it in under 2 days. It's easy to read, but may be hard to swallow. If you are serious about changing your mind about hard work, willing to commit to your personal success, and can handle having your toes stepped on long enough to realize that you must change your habits and do the things successful people do so you can have what successful people have, then I challenge you to read this life-altering book. Although you may feel the sting of self-discovery and inadequacy initially, if you put these principles in his book into practice, I truly believe you will be rewarded with life's best; not just down the road, but also along the way. In his book, Rory Vaden challenges you with this question, Next time you come to a set of stairs and an escalator, are you going to do what everyone else is doing and use the escalator, or are you going to do what others won't do so you can have what others don't have and Take the Stairs?
